SYNOPSIS

Until 1997, the Flemish town Vilvoorde was synonymous with Renault. When the French car factory suddenly shut down its plant, 3100 workers went on strike, paralyzing Belgium for weeks and giving rise to solidarity strikes all over Europe.

But fifteen years after, what remains after solidarity and struggle? Based on true events, this fictionalized account follows Félix, a former worker on an assembly line, and his attempt to overcome forgetting and make sense of the traumatic events.

DIRECTOR’S STATEMENT

Staande! Debout! is based on the « hardcore group », a cluster of Flemish and Wallonian workers who at the time fought for to keep the Renault factory open, whose lives had been rendered “obsolete”. The people we followed during the scripting have been active in trying to influence the circumstances of their lives in the shadow of the multinational industry. But after fifteen years, only shadows remain. Social activities and the engagement in the community have been reduced to a minimum, relations within family and friends have deteriorated into helplessness. The life of the community turned into a form of agonia.

Our starting point for this fiction was the group’s experiences, and their interpretations. We wrote a screenplay around issues of work, solidarity, cohesion and opportunities to re-evaluate one’s situation. The stories are tied around the local Solidarity Monument, shaped to form a clenched fist, and molds itself a silent monument on the individual’s ability to influence their own lives.
